How does ApeCoin (APE) work?

ApeCoin is an ERC-20 token (built on Ethereum) developed as both a utility and governance token. This means holders gain access to exclusive events and services. Additionally, holders have voting rights within the ApeCoin DAO, allowing them to participate in decisions and changes within the ecosystem.

Furthermore, the APE token can be used for payments within the BAYC ecosystem and with partners that accept APE. Lastly, APE can be integrated into gaming dApps, where it plays a crucial role in the in-game economy.

Who founded ApeCoin?

ApeCoin was launched in 2022 by the ApeCoin DAO, a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) responsible for developing the ApeCoin ecosystem. The APE Foundation also played a key role in the launch.
The APE Foundation serves as a governing body responsible for facilitating daily operations and decision-making within the ApeCoin ecosystem. The initial board consisted of influential figures from the crypto and gaming industries, including:

  • Alexis Ohanian – co-founder of Reddit.
  • Amy Wu – former executive at FTX and expert in gaming and crypto.
  • Yat Siu – co-founder of Animoca Brands, a company specializing in blockchain gaming.
  • Dean Steinbeck – lawyer and expert in decentralized law.
  • Maaria Bajwa – investor at Sound Ventures.

These board members initially served a six-month term, after which the community through the ApeCoin DAO was able to vote in new members.

How was APE released?

During the launch of APE in 2022, 1 billion APE tokens were created. This is also the maximum supply, as no additional tokens will be issued. The tokens were then distributed among various stakeholders involved in the project. The distribution was as follows:

  • 62% to the community: 15% of the tokens were directly distributed to holders of the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) and Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) NFT collections right after creation. The remaining 47% is reserved for DAO initiatives and ecosystem development.
  • 16% to Yuga Labs and charitable causes: Yuga Labs, the developers of Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) and Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC), received a portion of the tokens. A part was also allocated to the Jane Goodall Legacy Foundation, a charity focused on conservation.
  • 14% to launch partners and investors: This included strategic partners who assisted with the launch and early funding.
  • 8% to BAYC founders: The four founders of Yuga Labs collectively received 8% of the tokens.

This distribution ensured that both the BAYC community and the developers of ApeCoin could benefit from the launch.
